Ice wolves rather than werewolves, but the Elementals – humans with the ability to shift into wolf form – have talents beyond merely changing shape. The wolves can summon water, creating ice spears to battle their sworn enemies the scorch dragons, a constant threat in Vallen where orphan twins Anders and Rayna fight to survive on the city’s streets.
When the twins discover they have opposing elemental forms, Anders is forced to question whether he and Rayna are really related. Regardless, she is his only friend and when she is taken by the scorch dragons, Anders must come up with a plan to save her. Enrolling in the Ulfar Academy seems his only chance of learning what he needs to rescue Rayna. But the pack demands loyalty, and if the ice wolves discover Anders’s true motive he won’t live long enough to save his sister.
Amie Kaufman’s most recent solo work does not disappoint. The first book in the Elementals series, Ice Wolves is captivating. Kaufman has crafted a delightful story, exploring themes of friendship and allegiance in a world where prejudice reigns. I read it in one night. Need I say more? Didn’t think so.
